Analysis of the economic and animal production impact of Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease (PCVAD) on the Canadian and North American pork industries
The stated objective of this study is to provide an analysis of the economic and animal production impact of PCVAD on the Canadian and North American pork industries. This involves creating a detailed and comprehensive record of the impacts on animal productivity and then using this as the basis from which to determine the direct and indirect economic consequences of the disease on the pork industry across Canada and North America.
Deliverables include: (1) a statistical and anecdotal summary of what happened within swine herds infected across Canada – country and regional comparison, (2) an overview of the impacts and effects of PCVAD in the rest of North America, (3) an overview of the international impacts of the disease, (4) an analysis of the economic impacts of the disease including: case studies; cost of production analysis, (5) an analysis of the economic on ancillary pork industry sectors including: feed industry; animal health professionals and suppliers, processors, and markets, (6) an outline of the psychological impact on pork producers and the industry at large, (7) an assessment of the cumulative effect of PCVAD on the pork industry in Canada and North America, (8) an assessment of the macro economic impact on pork markets internationally, and (9) use the analysis to provide recommendations that would help mitigate and prevent similar experiences in future emerging or re-emerging swine disease situations – lessons learned
