A Case Study of the effectiveness of the response to the emergence of Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease (PCVAD) within the Canadian pork industry
The objective of this project is to learn from the previous PCVAD experience and thus be able to mitigate or prevent future new disease outbreaks. The objectives of this project include: (1) the creation of a detailed and comprehensive record and history of what happened as the PCVAD was identified and spread within the Canadian pork industry, (2) the documentation of how the response to the disease unfolded, (3) the identification of any bottlenecks in the response to the outbreak as well as any issues encountered, (4) the identification and description of any gaps in the response to the PCVAD outbreak, and (5) the development of recommendations to ensure that a more effective response in any future emerging disease outbreak. These recommended strategies would involve all aspects of the swine industry including government, animal health suppliers, animal health professionals, researchers, and producers.
