PigGen Canada research program development for swine genetics and swine health.
The genetic aspects of swine health and disease resistance have been identified as important tools in the overall Canadian swine health strategy. This project will finalize the review of the on-going swine health and genetics projects and associated researchers within Canada, determine the areas of emphasis, determine the specific objectives, and determine how to structure and fund a larger scale targeted research and development project.
This project will bring together a small group of experts, Canadian and international, along with PigGen Canada and CSHB personnel for a 1 to 2 day workshop to develop the specific objectives, structure and plans for the research project. The objective of this approach is to clearly define the attainable objectives, structure and activities for the larger project. PigGen Canada and CSHB would work together to secure future funding for the implementation and completion of the proposed program. This approach is required to focus resources on the genetics of swine health because of the high cost of collecting the health phenotypes, the large animal populations required and the expense of utilizing genomic tools such as the 60K SNP chip.
This project will provide a clear direction and plan for future swine health and genetics research activities in Canada.
