Research Program

PRRS Analysis

Project Title

A Risk, Benefit, Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat Analysis for the control and possible eradication of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus within the Canadian swine herd.

Project Summary

This project will provide a detailed and practical discussion paper outlining if increased control and possible eradication of the PRRS virus is technically and organizationally possible. Can this be accomplished at the farm, local, regional, provincial and eventual national area levels? The risks and benefits along with a detailed SWOT (Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats) analysis of these various area levels of control and eradication will be discussed.

The economic and animal productivity gains which can be expected from the investment in such a large-scale will be calculated. The impacts of a PRRS control and eradication program on the entire Canadian pork industry will be discussed looking at the international meat trade, trade and markets for breeding swine and trade in iso-wean, feeder and market pigs.

Specific recommendations will be made on how to improve the control and the ultimate eradication of the PRRS virus in Canada.
